Eric Carbonaro, 18, surrendered himself on Tuesday after a grand jury issued an indictment that charged him with two counts of tampering with physical evidence and one count of conspiracy as a hate crime, the Record said.
Prosecutors allege Carbonaro helped spray paint images of swastikas, the words “Heil Hitler” and Nazi “SS” symbols on the walls and headstones in the cemetery on the morning of Oct. 9, 2016. They also allege Carbonaro and two others destroyed evidence of the crime by deleting images and other information from their cell phones.
Carbonaro, president of his senior class at S.S. Seward, was let go without bail on the condition he attends a pretrial release program, the Record said.
